Most of the windows in the house already have Plantation shutters. I haven’t decided if I’ll leave them as they are or add curtains to some of them. The great room window and French doors, however, must have something done. The seller told me that these drapes were hanging here when she bought the house nine years ago. She liked them. Once upon a time, they were fashionable and probably cost a small fortune.
But not now. They are off-white and very formal and very stained and they will soon be history. We’ll be painting this room very soon, in a yet-t0-be-decided-upon sandy-beigey color.
Oh, the ceiling fan paddles that you can see in the top of the photo will not be there. We always install completely white fans because we want them to “disappear” into the ceiling. I don’t like visual distractions in a room (except for the natural type, like through the windows).
I don’t want to hide the view through the window, but I do want something that will close up for privacy when the sun goes down. I don’t know yet what we’ll put here.
I’m open to suggestions.

It must be a north or east facing windows if that was all the window treatment that it got. I’d vote for just a swag across the top and down the sides (like the one I had in my Texas living room) and
skip doing anything on the french doors.
Shutters are so wonderful, as you never have to re-do them, but they would look a bit heavy in that window.
If for some reason it faces south or west I’d have them torn out and replaced with in between the glass levelors.
Gosh I hate the window treatment part of home decorating. Soooo expensive, and always goes out of style in ten years anyway. I hope you have an inspired interior designer who will come up with something that will make your windows the focal point of loveliness that they deserve to be.

I just noticed the bishop’s sleeve side drape. If you ditched that part of the treatment, the top part might look fine…at least for now.

Oh, I guess I should have noted – the window faces ENE. The drapes are badly stained, so no part of it is really usable, and the style is just too formal for me. I’d be content leaving the French doors completely uncovered, but they oppose where the TV will sit. I don’t know if that will create a glare or not. The covered lanai is just out the door and window and it provides shade in all but the earliest part of the day.
The master bedroom has nearly the identical window (no arched window) facing in the same direction, but they have Plantation shutters.

Gee I have preoccupied and not been over here for a while. Congrats on the house!
And you don’t want to block any of your view or the light coming in. How formal is your furniture in this room? If Its less formal -I could picture something gauze-y (yah, not a word is it?) Light and airy. Or I have seen some cute things done with sheets, a decorative pole, yah…( I wanted to be an interior decorated in my life before kids and farm…lol)
Have you looked at bgh.com ? they have tons of great ideas.

The windows are very nice. I’m with you on the curtains though. Something less formal and more free looking would be nice.

Beautiful windows, but those drapes are way too formal for me too. I’d ditch them even if they were in perfect condition. I’ll be interested to see what you decide to replace them with.

Hmmm. . I love windows. . lots of windows. .
if you are needing to have glare cut down for television watching. . I would go with the plantation shutters and yet .. .oh to cover those windows is sad.
What about an off white linen drapery that can be open when privacy is not needed .. I always think of Linen as cool and clean.
